What is an Enneagram?
The Enneagram is a profound process and system for self-discovery. It identifies nine core strategies, known as types, that we use for getting our needs met. These personality types are unconscious thought, emotion, feeling and behaviour patterns. Awareness and understanding of our core type brings awareness of our mask, our false self, and where we are not being authentic.
This awareness leads to deeper self-discovery and personal growth. By understanding the Enneagram and all the different types, we can even begin to get a better sense of other people’s behaviours and what motivates them. This can be very liberating and can allow us to have more compassion for others.
The personality is the entire structure, and each type is a specific area of the entire personality structure. This means that we have all types within us; however, one type is known as our leading type, and this is the type that we unconsciously fall into.
Personality is something that develops very early on in our infancy and childhood. While it helps us to navigate the world early on, as adults it becomes a stumbling block that limits us; like training wheels on a bicycle, eventually, they must come off for us to experience what balance really is.
No one wants to be put in a box, so even the idea of being typed will often be met with some resistance. But as you will learn the Enneagram doesn’t put us in a box, it rather shows us the box we unconsciously are already in. It is a fulcrum that we can use to break out of the limiting structure of the personality and even deeper to the discovery and recovery of our essence. By letting go our attachment and identification to the personality structure we can discover our true nature.
The Typing Interview
Doing an online test can be useful but cannot accurately determine your type. Typing is more than just answering yes/no questions and it is very easy to mistype yourself. The truth is that only you can discover your leading type. And this can take time. You are not your personality.
The process of typing yourself is a process of self-discovery through self-observation. Some people find their type the first time while others can take years of self-discovery to identify their type.
